Many Iranians living abroad, for various reasons such as a lost passport, expired validity, inability to renew it, or residency issues, are unable to use their Iranian passport. In such cases, to return to Iran, it is possible to obtain a laissez-passer (a return document) from an Iranian embassy or representation.

What is a laissez-passer?

A laissez-passer, or return document to Iran, is a document issued by representations of the Islamic Republic of Iran abroad to facilitate the return of individuals who do not have a valid passport.

This is a temporary document issued for a single entry into Iran only, with a limited period of validity — usually one month.

Who can obtain a laissez-passer?

Iranians who have lost their passport
Individuals whose passport has expired and who cannot renew it quickly
People who have never had a passport but hold Iranian nationality
Iranians living abroad in an irregular residency status who wish to return
Children born abroad who have not yet obtained an Iranian birth certificate and passport

Documents required to apply for a laissez-passer

This usually includes the following:

One recent passport-style photograph
The laissez-passer application form (available from the embassy or its website)
A copy or details of the birth certificate, national ID card, or previous passport (if available)
Proof of Iranian nationality (for example, the father's or mother's birth certificate)
If required: birth certificate, residency card, and their official translation

Steps to obtain a laissez-passer

Visit in person, or apply online through the website of the Iranian embassy or consulate in your country of residence
Complete the application form and submit the documents
Review of the documents and verification of Iranian nationality
Issuance of the laissez-passer and delivery to the applicant

Important notes

The laissez-passer can only be used to enter Iran, and it cannot be used to leave the country again
This document is generally valid for up to 30 days
After entering Iran, the individual must apply to the passport office to obtain or renew a passport
